Saint’s Life Story
His Early Life
Pietro (Peter) was born around 1033 in Salerno, Italy, into a noble family associated with the princes of Lombardy. The exact year of his birth and Pietro’s parents names are unknown. In early childhood, he was left an orphan. So, Pierto came to be entrusted to the Abbey of Sts. Mary and Saint Benedict in Salerno.
Benedictine Monk
Sometime after 1049 and before 1062, Hildebrand of Sovana, in his capacity as legate of Pope visited the monastery, and took Pietro into his entourage. Pietro entered the Benedictine order and became a monk at the renowned San Benedetto monastery in Salerno.
Papal Chaplain
After his ordination as a priest, Pietro served as a papal chaplain. Pietro’s devoutness and dedication caught the attention and support of the Hildebrand of Sovana, the future Pope Saint Gregory VII.
Bishop of Anagni
With Hildebrand’s backing, Pietro was appointed as the Bishop of Anagni, by Pope Alexander II in the year 1062. His nomination took place during the rivalry of Pope Alexander with the anti-pope Otto II, during which the true Pope sought to put bishops loyal to him in the empty episcopal sees of the Roman Province. So, Pietro, must have been a most trusted collaborator of the Pope and a man of firm character who would be trusted not to cede to threats and bribes — rare virtues in the 11th century’s many tumults and controversies.
Pietro built a reputation of being a humble and diligent servant of God. It was during his time as bishop that he developed a strong bond with Saint Bruno of Segni, whom he considered a dear friend and co-worker. Together, they exemplified a deep commitment to their faith and to the flourishing of their communities.
Rebuit Cathedral
As the Bishop, Pietro improved the spiritual welfare of Anagni. He started rebuilding the Cathedral and reformed the Clerics of the See. When he came to the diocese, the church was in complete ruins. He rebuilt it on the highest point of the city, in Romanesque style and adorned it with the most beautiful inlaid mosaic floors, which still exist to this day.
This work of restoration was truly an inspiration of God as can be seen by the important role this Cathedral would play in Church history in subsequent generations. In this Cathedral, Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, Saint Clare of Assisi, Saint Edward II King and Confessor and Saint Peter the Hermit were all canonized.
Papal Legate
Then, Pietro was sent, as the Papal Legate, to Constantinople and the Eastern Empire where he was also able to convince Emperor Michael VII Doukas, to provide funds and craftsmen to assist in the building of Anagni’s Cathedral. The new Cathedral also included an annexed hospice, where free accommodation and care was provided not only to the sick but also to pilgrims.
During this time, Emperor Michael fell gravely ill. However, through a miraculous intervention, Pietro healed him. This miraculous healing further solidified his reputation as a saintly figure.
The First Crusade
In 1096, Pietro joined, as chaplain, the forces of Bohemond of Taranto during the First Crusade on their way to Jerusalem and the Holy Land. Later, he returned by way of Constantinople, Palermo and Salerno. Pietro returned back to his Diocese of Anagni around 1102. His involvement in this holy campaign demonstrated his unwavering dedication to the Christian cause and his readiness to stand up for his beliefs.
His Death
After forty-three years as Bishop, Pietro died on August 3, 1105 in Salerno, Italy. His great friend and collaborator, Saint Bruno of Segni, was then able, after celebrating his funeral, to recount his edifying life and prepare for his glorification. He was buried in the cathedral in Salerno, but his relics were later transferred to Anagni, Italy, where they were enshrined in a niche behind an altar on February 11, 1324.
In 1109, a mere four years after his death, Pietro was canonized by Pope Paschal II.

Reflection
Saint Pietro of Anagni teaches us that true leadership in the Church begins with prayer and faithful service. As a Benedictine monk who later became Bishop of Anagni, he devoted his life to strengthening the spiritual life of his people and rebuilding the Cathedral of Anagni. His example reminds us that God often calls us to build—not only with stone and labor, but with faith, encouragement, and acts of mercy that strengthen the hearts of others.
He also lived as a servant of the wider Church, traveling as a papal legate and working for unity and support beyond his own diocese in the First Crusade. Saint Pietro’s life shows that faith is never meant to remain isolated. He used his gifts to serve wherever God sent him, trusting that obedience and mission were part of his path to holiness. His willingness to go where he was needed challenges us to be open to God’s call, even when it leads us beyond our comfort.
Saint Pietro’s legacy is one of pastoral vigilance, charity, and perseverance. He even helped establish care for the sick and for traveling pilgrims, revealing a heart deeply attentive to human need. His witness invites us to become builders of hope in our own communities through compassion, faithfulness, and humble service.
How is God calling you to help build up your faith community through compassion and service?
Prayers
