Saint’s Life Story
His Early Life
Not much is known about his early life, except that Evermund, also known as Ebremund, was born in the town of Bayeux, France, during a time of political and religious turmoil. It can be estimated that he was born sometime in the mid to late 7th century. Evermund is thought to have been a courtier, which means that he probably came from a wealthy family born into nobility to have this position. However, it is through his later life and his extraordinary dedication to the faith that he achieved sanctity and became an inspiration for many.
Married
Evermund was married to a devout woman, who shared his love for God and His teachings. There is no knowledge of his wife’s name or if they had any children. Together, they built a strong family life centered around faith and compassion.
Separated
However, their devotion to God eventually led them on separate spiritual paths. Evermund’s wife, deeply moved by the teachings of Christ, made the decision to enter a convent and dedicate her life to serving God. Evermund, too, felt the call to embrace a monastic life. So, with his wife’s blessing and encouragement. Evermund became a Benedictine monk, receiving the monastic tonsure, at the Abbey of Our Lady of Fontenay-Louvet (abbaye Notre-Dame de Fontenay-Louvet) in present-day L’Orée-d’Écouves, (formerly Fontenai-les-Louvets), Normandy, France in the diocese of Séez, France.
Abbott
Evermund went on to become the abbot, leading and guiding his fellow monks in their pursuit of spiritual growth and enlightenment. As an abbot, Evermund displayed exceptional leadership qualities and wisdom. He was known for his unwavering commitment to the teachings of Christ, and his dedication to living a life of prayer, contemplation, and service to others. His gentle and patient demeanor made him a respected figure among his colleagues and a beloved spiritual guide for many.
Founder
Recognizing the importance of community building, he founded several monasteries and convents, providing havens for those seeking refuge in their faith. These sacred spaces became centers of prayer, learning, and service, fostering spiritual growth and religious devotion among the people. Throughout his life of service, Evermund exemplified the virtues of humility, selflessness, and compassion.

Reflection
Saint Evermund of Fontenay was born into nobility in France in the 7th century and once married. However, he and his wife mutually chose separate celibate monastic lives dedicated to God, leaving behind their wealth and possessions. His decision shows that conversion is not limited by one’s stage in life. God can call us to deeper devotion at any moment.
As founder and later Abbot of the monastery at Fontenay-Louvet in Normandy, France, Saint Evermund devoted himself to building a life centered on prayer and service. His witness teaches us that faith flourishes when rooted in community and daily fidelity. We may not all be called to monastic life. But, we are all invited to create sacred spaces in our hearts and homes where prayer and peace can grow.
Saint Evermund’s life also speaks of trust in God’s providence and the courage to let go of worldly comforts. His example encourages us to ask whether we are holding too tightly to possessions instead of allowing God to lead us more fully into His will.
While we may not be called to separate from a marriage, what might God be asking me to surrender in my life so that I may grow closer to Him?
Prayers
Saint Evermund of Fontenay,
You left behind the riches of your noble married life to seek the treasures of heaven as a monk and abbot in France.
Teach us to find peace in simplicity, joy in service, and strength in prayer.
Help us to see that holiness is not found in what we own, but in how we love.
Guide us to follow Christ with pure hearts, so that, like you, we may bring light to the world through quiet faithfulness.
Saint Evermund of Fontenay, pray for us. Amen.
