Saint’s Life Story

His Early Life

Zeno, also known as Zenon or Zinon, was born in the 3rd century. Little information is known about his early childhood life. So, Zeno’s life story is not extensively documented.

Reign of Emperor Diocletian

Zeno lived during a time marked by widespread persecution of Christians. He was an Imperial Roman soldier and Commander of a Regiment living in Bithynia in Asia Minor (today Izmit, Turkey) during the reign of Roman Emperors Diocletian and Maximian. Emperor Diocletian goes down in history as the most bloodthirsty of the Christian persecutors.

Mocked Ceremony

Emperor Diocletian conducted a ceremony that involved offering sacrifice to a statue of the goddess Ceres. Zeno bravely condemned the conduct and devotion of the Emperor Diocletian in full public view. In the Name of God, he laughed at and ridiculed the whole procedure, openly displaying his contempt and mockery towards the proceedings of the Emperor offering sacrifice to a statue of the soulless Roman goddess Ceres.

His Martyrdom

Zeno was immediately seized and arrested based on the Emperor’s order. In response, Emperor Diocletian had Zeno’s teeth knocked out and his jaw shattered and crushed with stones as punishment for his audacity to speak against the Emperor’s actions. Despite his physical injuries, Zeno remained resolute in his Christian beliefs and refused to renounce his faith.

This unwavering commitment to Christianity ultimately led to his martyrdom. In the year 303, Zeno was beheaded in Nicomedia, Bithynia (modern-day Izmit, Turkey), along with thousands of other Christians who were also victims of widespread persecution during this period. Saint Zeno’s feast days are celebrated on December 22nd and December 28th as one of the 20,000 Martyrs of Nicomedia.

His example of courage, steadfastness, and unwavering faith serves as an inspiration for Christians facing adversity and persecution.

Reflection

Saint Zeno of Nicomedia was a soldier who found a higher allegiance than any earthly army could command. When he witnessed Emperor Diocletian offering sacrifice to a statue of the goddess Ceres, Zeno’s conscience would not allow him to remain silent. In the Name of God, he publicly laughed at and ridiculed the whole procedure, openly displaying his contempt and mockery towards the pagan proceedings.

His steadfastness shows us the power of integrity rooted in faith. Saint Zeno’s heart belonged first to God, who he worshipped as an early Christian, not to fear or to power. His story reminds us that discipleship sometimes calls for quiet acts of bravery: speaking truth when silence would be safer, standing firm when compromise would be easier. Like Saint Zeno, we are called to live with courage that flows not from anger or pride, but from love of Christ and conviction of the truth.

When I see the worshipping of false idols in our modern day life, do I, like Saint Zeno, find the courage to speak and act with faith, or do I let fear keep me silent?

Prayers

Saint Zeno of Nicomedia,

You chose loyalty to Christ while laughing at those worshiping false gods, like Ceres.

Grant me a heart that loves God more than comfort of the status quo and courage that does not waver in the face of fear.

May your example inspire me to witness my faith with humility and strength, to serve with integrity, and to trust that God’s grace is stronger than any threat.

May I live as a true disciple, bold in love and steadfast in hope, until the day I share in the victory of Christ and join you in heaven.
.
Saint Zeno of Nicomedia, pray for us! Amen.
