Saint Isidore of Seville
Bishop and Doctor of the Church
(c. 560 – 636)
“If a man wants to be always in God’s company, he must pray regularly and read regularly. When we pray, we talk to God; when we read, God talks to us.”
Saint Isidore of Seville
Saint’s Life Story
Saintly Siblings
Isidore was born around 560 in Cartagena, Spain to his pious parents, Severianus and Theodora. He had a younger brother, Saint Fulgentius, an older brother Saint Leander, and a sister Saint Florentina. Isidore was educated under the supervision of his older brother Leander.
Bishop of Seville
Isidore succeeded him as Bishop of Seville around 600. Isidore became noted as one of the most learned men of his times, continuing Leander’s work of converting the Arian Visigoths. He presided over several important councils, including that of Seville in 619 and Toledo in 633.
Writer
Isidore was greatly interested in education and he founded schools in each diocese similar to our present-day seminaries. He broadened the curriculum to include liberal arts, medicine, and law as well as the conventional subjects. Isidore compiled the Etymologies, an encyclopedia of the knowledge of his times. He was a voluminous writer. Isidore wrote treatises on theology, astronomy, and geography, histories (where his history of the Goths is the principal information about them), and biographies.
His Death
Isidore was known for his austerities and his charities and is considered the last of the ancient Christian philosophers. Isidore was well versed in the Latin, Greek, and Hebrew languages. He governed his church about 37 years, continuing his assiduous labors up to an advanced old age. On April 4, 636, Isidore died in Seville, Spain. Isidore was declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope Benedict XIV in 1722.

Reflection
Saint Isidore of Seville’s commitment to learning was not merely for intellectual advancement; it was deeply connected to his faith. He saw knowledge as a way to better understand God and His creation. Saint Isidore of Seville also believed that education was essential for the Christian life. This integration of faith and reason is a hallmark of his legacy, reminding us that true wisdom is found in the harmonious pursuit of both.
Do we seek knowledge as a way to deepen our understanding of God and the world He created? Are we committed to growing intellectually as well as spiritually?
Prayers
Saint Isidore of Seville,
As Doctor of the Church and Patron of the Internet, you were a model of learning and faith.
You gathered the wisdom of the ages and shared it generously so that others might come to know the truth of God.
Grant us, through your prayers, the grace to seek knowledge, not for our own sake, but for the greater glory of God and the service of others.
Help us to use the tools of technology for good and to spread the Gospel in our words and actions.
Guide us in our studies and in our work that all we do may be pleasing to God and a blessing to others.
We ask this through Jesus Christ, our Lord, Who lives and reigns with the Father and the Holy Spirit, God, forever and ever.
