Saint’s Life Story
His Early Life
Alexius was born into a wealthy Christian family in Rome in the 4th century. His father, Euphemianus, was a respected Roman Senator noted for both his virtue and his great wealth and his mother was Algas. From an early age, Alexius felt called to devote himself entirely to God, seeking a life of holiness and service.
However, his parents had different plans for him. They arranged a marriage for Alexius, hoping he would embrace a life of privilege and societal expectations. On his wedding day, Alexius managed to convince his fiancée to release him, allowing him to follow his true calling. In obedience to the wishes of his parents, Alexis did marry, but after the ceremony, by Divine Inspiration, he removed his wedding band and gave it back to his bride.
Escaped as a Beggar
Disguised as a beggar, he left his home on his wedding night. After giving away all that he had brought with him, he sought refuge begging for alms at the gate of Our Lady’s church near Edessa in Syria.
His family, in the deepest grief, could not fathom the mystery of his disappearance. They would have been consoled if God had taken of them instead through death. The servants of Alexius, whom his father had sent in search of him, arrived in Edessa. After seeing Alexius among the poor at the gate of Our Lady’s church, gave him an alms, not recognizing him.
At the church, Alexius experienced a vision of the Virgin Mary, who identified him as an extraordinary person of God. The townspeople did not recognize Alexius until a miraculous icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary (later this image was called Madonna of St Alexius) singled him out as a “Man of God”. After this event, Alexius drew the attention and admiration from those around him.
Returned Home to Rome
Seeking anonymity, Alexius then decided to return to Rome, where he hoped his own family would not recognize him. Arriving back in Rome as a beggar, Alexius went to his parents’ home. Unrecognized by his own family, he was received with kindness and hospitality, as his parents had a tradition of caring for the poor. He lived there for seventeen years, mostly concealed in a small corner beneath the stairs eating the scraps from his parents table. During this time, Alexius dedicated himself to prayer, contemplation, and teaching catechism to children in the neighborhood.
His Death
A voice was heard by all in attendance at the Pope’s Mass, saying: “Seek the man of God, he will pray for Rome, and the Lord will be favorable to it; he will die Friday.” All the city undertook in vain to find this unknown Saint.
Meanwhile, God had commanded Alexius himself to write down his life story and sign it. So, in this way He Himself confirmed His servant’s sanctity. Sometime in the early 5th century, Alexis died in Rome, Italy and was found lifeless in his retreat, holding that document in his hand.
The Pope read aloud what was written on the parchment of Alexis. Everywhere in Rome, there was a single cry of admiration, impossible to describe. The house of Alexius’ father Euphemianus was later transformed into a church dedicated to Saint Alexius. His profound act of self-denial, done out of love for God, deeply moved his family and the Catholic faithful.
Relics of Saint Alexius are found in some churches and monasteries in Greece, including the Esphigmenou monastery of Mount Athos and the Dormition of Theotokos Monastery, Boeotia.

Reflection
Saint Alexius of Rome is shrouded in humility and mystery. Born into a wealthy Roman family, he chose to abandon all comfort and privilege to live a life of poverty and prayer. After years of pilgrimage and hidden service as a beggar to the poor, Alexius returned home unrecognized. He lived under the stairs of his family’s house, silently enduring hardship and humiliation. It wasn’t until his death that his identity was revealed, and his sanctity recognized. Alexius’ life speaks powerfully to the virtue of detachment—from wealth, recognition, and even comfort. In a world that often measures worth by status or success, Saint Alexius challenges us to find our value in being known by God alone. His hidden holiness reminds us that true greatness is found not in being seen, but in loving deeply and serving silently.
Am I willing to let go of comfort, approval, or recognition to follow Christ more closely? How might I humbly and quietly serve others, without seeking acknowledgment, trusting that God sees all things done in love, like Saint Alexius of Rome?
Prayers
Saint Alexius of Rome,
You left behind wealth and honor to follow Christ in poverty and hiddenness, living a life unknown to the world, but deeply known and loved by God.
Teach us to seek not the praise of others, but the quiet joy of serving in secret.
Help us to let go of pride and worldly attachments, so we may grow in humility and trust in your love.
Intercede for those who are forgotten or overlooked, and for all who carry hidden burdens in silence.
May your example inspire us to offer our lives fully to God, whether seen or unseen.
May we live with hearts fixed on Heaven, content to be small in the eyes of the world, but great in the eyes of God.
Saint Alexius of Rome, pray for us! Amen.
